Island Vis has a rich and turbulent history from the Greeks, Romans and Venetians to the European powers of France, Britain, Austria and Italy all vying for control.
Old Greeks used this naturally protected haven - rich in fisch, lobsters and domestic wines, natural beauty of the beaches. Magic marine images that has been hidden for years, today attracts many yachtsmen.
Agatarhid - Atenei, I, 28, d (51) said that wine from Issa, the island in the Adriatic Sea, was better compared with all the others. Sandy island soil is the best for wine-growing, therefore the Vis vineyards are among best in Dalmatia. Autochtonous species cultivated on Vis are : Plavac mali, Kuc and Bugava. The island has a palm-tree nursery.
Komiza on island Vis has been mentioned in the historical documents in the 12th century. The Benedictines from the neighbouring Bisevo settled there and founded the monastery of St. Nikola. The monastery complex with the church and defence tower from the 17th century is still preserved.
Komiza has preserved its authentic charm of a fishermen townlet’s harmonious and peaceful way of life in Dalmatia. It will enchant you with its untouched nature, beauty of its fields, numerous bays and beaches, clean sea, stone streets and houses.
A sacrifice boat is burned every year in front of the parish church of St. Nikola on December 6lh during the celebration of St. Nikola, the patron of travellers, seamen and fisherman (which is also the day of Komiza).

A copy of the Komiza fishing boat gajeta falkusa represented the Croatian maritime heritage at the world fair EXPO 1998 in Lisbon. In 1998 UNESCO put the Komiza falkusa on its World Heritage list. This type of fishing boat had been built for 300 years at the village Komiza on the island of Vis in Croatia. It was the oldest known boat race in Europe.
The nature on the island of Vis is untouched because, until recently - 1989, the island was not opened to tourists. Therefore, it is a great place for a quiet and pleasant holiday on a yacht.
