Park of the nature...
The very name Lastovo came from ancient times, first known as Ladesta from the IV century B.C. The Greek tribe called it Ladestanos. The Romans gave the island the solemn latin name of Augusta Insula meaning the island of Emperors. In the Mid-10th century it has name Lastobon which proves the early existance of Croats.
The green forests and 46 cultivated valleys ( vineyards and olive trees) are spread over its 56 km². There are 46 churches and chapels on the island, some of them originating from ancient times. The island is surrounded by 46 smaller islands and cliffs.
Among those to the west Sušac is the largest one.
The coast-line is mainly steep and the surrounding sea is deep.
Navigating on a boat, visit the untouched nature and numerous bays. Among all the beautiful bays, the Zaklopatica bay and Skrivena Luka ( Portorus ) bay must be mentioned, but also the island of Saplun which is famous for its beautiful sand beaches. The cape Struga, that forms the eastern part of Skrivena Luka has a lighthouse that is built here in 1839, and is one of the oldest lighthouses in Croatia and on the Adriatic Sea.
The island of Lastovo is known for its underwater world rich with fish. Here you can find most diverse offer of everything that comes from the sea. Here are also the largest breeding grounds for fish and lobster.
Town of Lastovo is the largest and one of the most beautifull old settlements on the Adriatic. The whole town is a protected cultural monument because of its unique reneisance architecture and amphitheatrical way it was built. The town is hidden from the view from the sea and is located inland which is the testimony to the violent past and pirate acitvity. Special tourist attractions are the famous Lastovo chimneys that were once status symbols of old Lastovo families, Lastovo stairs made by stones and Poklad Carnival Festival - a unique and authentic, folk tradition event, that commemorates victory over the pirates.
After almost fifty years, Lastovo is open to tourists again and it is becoming more popular. As this island is one of the last untouched areas of Mediterranean and because of it’s preserved beauty, the Croatian Ministry of Culture has confirmed that it has officially finished a legal procedure of establishing Lastovo and its archipelago as a new Nature Park.
Lastovo is one of some dozen gardens of Eden in the Mediterranean on the list of prestigious World Wild Foundation ( WWF ).
