Island of caves...
Your Yacht Charter vacation to Croatia is not complete without a visit to the island of Bisevo, situated in the south Dalmatia archipelago, southwest of the island Vis. From the deck of your charter yacht you will see numerous caves. The largest are Medvidina cave and Blue Cave.
Medvidina cave is very dark and very interesting geomorphologically.
At its end, the cave is very narrow and low, and its complete length of 160 meters ends with a little beach. Besides its attractiveness this cave was significant as the ideal breeding ground of one of the most endangered mammals in the world - the Mediterranean monk seal ( Monachus monachus ), a very rare species of seal. Today the Mediterranean monk seal has practically disappeared and can be rarely seen, but we should hope that very soon the beach at the end of the cave will once again be the cradle of little seals.
The Blue Cave in Balun Cove is especially attractive. The cave has been approachable since 1884, and it is accessible by little boat through the rock gate, but only when the sea is quite. The entrance is a narrow corridor, which is about 1,5m high and 2,5m wide. The cave is around 30m long and 18m deep. When the sea is calm, sunbeams that enters into the cave's interior through the submarine opening reflect from the white bottom floor andcolor the cave walls in an entire spectrum of colors with always dominating blue and objects in the water in silver. Glittering of silvery drops and an underwater bridge at the depth of some 6 m inside the cave that it is dividing it into two chambers, make the cave a world's attraction. Make sure that your visit to the cave is between 10 and 12 hours a.m. and at bright sunshine, as clouds would spoil the luminescence.
